Kukishinden Bisento and Nagamaki Concepts

A great day's training, this workshop was on the Bisentojutsu 眉尖刀術 kata from Kukishinden Ryu.

In the Bujinkan, there are no formal Nagamaki 長巻 (long wrapping) kata in any of the nine ryu-ha. It is a very old weapon, possibly from the Heian Jidai. Earlier in the year on visiting Noda, Someya Sensei spoke of using the bisentojutsu kata as a basis to study the nagamaki. We practiced both the formal kata taking into account the heavy weight of the bisento at first, and slightly modified versions with the nagamaki in mind.

1.    汪振        Oshin (deep swing)

2.    鬲逆        Kaku Gyaku (tripod reverse)

3.    竹斜        Chikusha (bamboo slant, cutting bamboo)

4.    波刃        Namiba (wave edge)

5.    抜刀        Batto (extracting sword)

6.    曦先        Gisen (preceding the sun, before the dawn)

7.    伸刀        Shinto (stretching sword)

8.    惺刀        Seito (realization sword)

9.    魅剣        Miken (bewitching blade)
